Notes:

In the newspaper articles announcing her marriage to Dexter S. King, she was called Miss Sarah Goff of Boston.¹

Research Notes for Sarah Goff:

She is almost certainly the daughter of Ebenezer Goff and Sally Guttridge (called Sally Gutrey in intention), who were married 29 Nov 1794 in Boston.² Born in 1798, Sarah was probably one of the oldest children of Ebenezer and Sally.

Several deeds establish a relationship between Ebenezer, Sally, and Sarah Goff; these deeds were executed after Ebenezer died. Per death announcement in the Boston Daily Advertiser, Ebenezer Goff of Washington Place, Fort Hill [Boston], died 1 Nov 1828.³

Sarah Goff was witness to a deed, dated 3 May 1844, in which Sally Goff, widow of Ebenezer Goff of Boston, sold to David Leavitt of Boston, for $3500, a parcel of land with buildings on the east side of Fort Hill in Boston. Sally Goff's interest in the land was aquired by virtue of a deed from George Henchman to Sally Goff, dated 22 Nov 1828, recorded as Suffolk County deed 332:146.⁴

George Henchman, mentioned in the deed, was the son-in-law, of Sally Goff, per death certificate of his wife, Harriet D. Henchman, daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah Goff.⁵ Though her children's death records refer to Ebenezer's wife as Sarah, she apparently went by the name Sally, a common nickname for Sarah, which is how she appeared in most of the records, including her marriage record and the land records.

Sarah Goff [the daughter] was witness to another earlier deed, dated 18 March 1836, in which Adam W. Thaxter Jr of Boston and his wife, Charlotte G. Thaxter, sold to Dr. Edward J. Davenport of Boston, for $3617, a lot in Boston.⁶

Charlotte G. Thaxter, grantor in the deed above, was the daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah (Sally) Goff, per her death record.⁷

These records point to the existence of a family headed by Ebenezer Goff and his wife Sally, with children Sarah Goff, Harriet D. Goff, and Charlotte Goff.

Another deed, dated 3 Feb 1821, from Ebenezer and Sally Goff to William Goff, was witnessed by Harriet D. Goff, and Charlotte Goff, providing further evidence for this family cluster.⁸

Finally, in 1880, Sarah (Goff) King was living in Newton, Massachusetts, just two dwellings distant from Samuel G. Thaxter, her nephew, son of Charlotte (Goff) Thaxter. Sarah died a few years later and was buried in Newton.

Unlike her sisters, Harriet and Charlotte, Sarah Goff's death certificate does not identify her parents, probably because the informant was unaware. But the family associations outlined above support the assertion that Ebenezer and Sally were her parents.
